The Creative Writing Department at SCPA is dedicated to fostering an imaginative, inspirational, and productive environment focused on the craft of writing. In this community of artists, students develop their unique voices and perspectives, with an emphasis on honesty in expression and the creation of professional-quality work that resonates with authenticity and power.

As a Career Technical Education (CTE) pathway, Creative Writing combines artistic growth with career readiness. Students engage in daily practice in reading, writing, listening, and speaking, building technical skill while exploring a wide range of genres—poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, playwriting, and screenwriting. This balance ensures students not only mature as artists but also gain industry-aligned skills that prepare them for future opportunities.

Beyond the classroom, students reach audiences through publication and performance opportunities, including public readings, school-wide showcases, and the student-produced art and literary magazine 1310, published twice a year. Working on 1310 gives students real-world experience in editing, layout/design, curation, and production workflows, while offering a professional platform to publish original writing and visual art.

Adobe Certification

An Adobe certification is an Ohio Department of Education (ODE) Career Technical Education industry-recognized credential that validates a student’s professional skills in Adobe digital media software.

For Creative Writing majors, certification demonstrates proficiency not only in technical tools but also in applying them to publishing, layout, and creative content production. Students who earn certification typically have completed around 150 hours of instruction and hands-on practice with the software, gaining experience with product features, industry standards, and career-related concepts.

Creative Writing students at SCPA can earn certification in:

Adobe InDesign – for page layout, book/magazine publishing, and literary journal design

Adobe Illustrator – for illustration, typography, and visual storytelling

Adobe Photoshop – for image editing, book covers, and multimedia projects
