The Drama Department at SCPA trains students in the art of acting and performance. Our mission is to nurture creativity, build technical skill, and develop the discipline necessary for success in the performing arts.

Preparatory Division (Grades K–6)

Admission is through the CPS lottery (K–3) or by audition (grades 4–6).

In grades (K–3), students are introduced to all the arts majors through broad creative exploration. In third grade, students audition for placement into the arts major that best aligns with their interests and talents. From grades 4–6, Drama students begin focused skill development, building a strong foundation in movement, voice, storytelling, and ensemble work.

Pre-Professional Conservatory (Grades 7–12)

The Drama program for grades 7–12 is part of SCPA’s Pre-Professional Conservatory and is also a Career Technical Education (CTE) program, designed for serious arts students. Admission is by audition, including for current sixth graders continuing at SCPA. Students follow a rigorous curriculum emphasizing advanced acting techniques, text analysis, stagecraft, and performance, while also developing essential college and career readiness skills through the CTE framework.

Whether or not students pursue a career in theatre, we believe the benefits of acting training—communication, empathy, confidence, and collaboration—extend far beyond the stage. A deep appreciation of theatre enriches personal growth and prepares students for success in any profession
