Program Highlights

The SCPA Jazz Program is a premier ensemble of talented student musicians dedicated to excellence in the study, performance, and preservation of the jazz tradition. Admission is by audition, and students are placed into one of two performing groups—the Repertory Jazz Group or the Large Ensemble—based on their strengths and developmental needs. In addition to daily coursework, students created and lead The Young Jazz Messengers, a student-run group that performs regularly at professional venues throughout the Greater Cincinnati region

At the heart of the program is a strong emphasis on jazz harmony, language, and improvisation. Unlike many traditional high school jazz programs, SCPA’s approach immerses students in the vocabulary of jazz through rigorous practice and performance. Students are assessed daily on their mastery of improvisatory concepts, including ear training, transcription, scales, bebop language, ii–V–I progressions, pentatonic studies, 12-bar blues, 32-bar song forms, rhythm changes, and even the advanced harmonic motion of Giant Steps.

Through this intensive training, SCPA jazz students not only honor the legacy of jazz but also gain the technical skills, stylistic fluency, and professional experiences to carry the genre forward.

The strength of the SCPA Jazz Program lies in its realistic opportunities to work intensely with jazz theory and improvisation.  It is not the typical high school program where students mostly learn parts with very limited lessons in improvising.

CTE

The Jazz Program at SCPA is also a Career Technical Education (CTE) pathway, combining artistic excellence with professional preparation. Students gain real-world experience through performance, ensemble leadership, and community engagement while mastering industry-standard skills in theory, improvisation, and collaboration. This balance of artistry and career readiness prepares graduates to pursue advanced study and professional opportunities in jazz and the broader music industry.
