Primary Visual Arts

The Primary Visual Arts program at SCPA provides students with an early foundation in creativity, collaboration, and artistic growth. Each class meets for one 50-minute session per week in a dedicated art space, where lessons are designed to develop creative agency, personal responsibility, and an appreciation for visual art.

K-3 Visual Arts Highlights

Peaceful Practice Song: Each class begins with a reminder that mistakes are part of the creative process and a valuable way we learn.

Hands-On Exploration: Students work with a wide range of artistic media while receiving explicit instruction in motor skills, from how to hold a pencil or create different types of lines to maneuvering scissors with confidence.

Primary Art Studio Environment: Flexible seating, student-centered supply stations, and real-world inspired studio jobs encourage independence, collaboration, and responsibility.

Collaborative Installation: Each year, all primary students contribute to a themed project. Individual artworks created in the fall come together in February to transform the SCPA Art Gallery into a full-scale installation—an inspiring and magical experience unique to SCPA.

Assessment & Growth

Students are assessed on studio etiquette and artistic skill, observed by the art teacher during class. Attendance and active participation are essential for accurate grading. Students are evaluated on proficiency, effort, and growth.
