Costume Design & Costume Construction

The Costuming program at SCPA immerses students in the art and craft of theatrical costuming, teaching them to design, build, and maintain the clothing that shapes character and storytelling on stage. Students gain a balance of artistic creativity and technical expertise, learning how fabric, fashion history, and design principles work together to create the visual world of a production.

Foundations
(Introductory Level)

Introductory courses focus on hand-stitching, fabric handling, sewing safety, and the use of patterns, before progressing to machine sewing, specialty seams, closures, and garment finishing. These hands-on projects build confidence and form the backbone of costuming skills. Students also explore the elements of art, principles of design, and script analysis to understand how costumes support character development and visual storytelling.

Technician Skills Development
(Intermediate Level)

In grades 9–10 (with advanced 8th graders eligible at the instructor's discretion), students expand their skills in costume construction and shop management. Courses introduce advanced sewing techniques, wardrobe organization, patterning, and the practical skills needed to serve as part of a production crew. Students gain experience with costume research, cleaning and storage practices, and collaborative backstage work, preparing them to contribute as technicians on SCPA productions.

Advanced Design & Application
(Upper-Level Study)

By grades 11–12, students who have demonstrated proficiency move into advanced coursework in costume design, makeup, and character-based projects. Here, they engage in script analysis, period research, and rendering to create original designs. Students develop skills in advanced sewing, pattern drafting, and textile arts while also taking part in Mainstage design assignments, collaborating with directors and designers to bring productions to life. These classes reflect professional industry practices and give students the opportunity to build a strong portfolio.

Professional Preparation

Across all levels, student progress is assessed through Arts Proficiency Exams (Boards), portfolio development, project-based assessments, and production work. Emphasis is placed on safety, professionalism, and teamwork. Graduates leave the program prepared for conservatory or university study in theatre design, fashion, or costume technology, with career opportunities ranging from costume design and construction to wardrobe supervision, theatrical makeup, and work in film, opera, ballet, and live entertainment.

Through this progression, SCPA students in Costume Design & Costume Construction develop the artistic insight, technical mastery, and collaborative skills to thrive as creative professionals in the performing arts.

I am committed to providing, relevant, challenging, high quality education that will enable graduates to reach career and life goals through knowledge and skills training that meets the needs of business, industry, and continuing education. I approach teaching my classes with a rigorous and scholarly attitude. The goal of the program is to understand the history of, relevance of, methods and techniques of textile arts and costume design. It is a personal goal to educate leaders, not followers. I have extremely high expectations and for my students. It is imperative they have the same for themselves and are willing to work hard and commit fully to their art.

Kathy Magistrelli
Costume Design

Katherine Magistrelli holds degrees in both Theater Arts and History form Edgecliff College of Xavier University. Before joining SCPA she was costume designer for Xavier University, Cincinnati Children’s Theater and numerous other community theater and regional productions. Katherine is a certified Career Technical teacher and is currently completing her Master’s degree in Education.
