Lighting & Sound
Lighting & Sound
The Lighting & Sound program at SCPA trains students to shape the atmosphere and emotion of live performance through the creative use of technology and design. Students develop both the artistic eye and technical expertise needed to enhance storytelling, guide audience focus, and support performers on stage.

Stage Lighting
Students explore how light transforms a production by studying the principles of lighting design and the technical operation of modern equipment. Coursework includes:
- Understanding how light influences mood, visibility, form, and focus.
- Learning the technical aspects of lighting instruments, color, and control systems.
- Programming and operating lighting consoles.
- Collaborating with directors and designers to create dynamic visual environments that support the narrative.
Stage Sound & Projection
Students also gain comprehensive experience in sound and projection design, blending creative artistry with technical precision. Coursework includes:
- The physics of sound and how it travels in performance spaces.
- Operation and maintenance of audio equipment and technology.
- Sound design principles for live theatre.
- Foley effects, live mixing, reinforcement, and recording.
- Editing and integrating soundscapes to enhance storytelling.
- Exploring projection design to expand the visual impact of productions.
Skills & Outcomes
Through hands-on training, students learn to combine design, problem-solving, and technical mastery to support live performances at SCPA. They build portfolios that demonstrate their ability to design, program, and operate lighting, sound, and projection systems, preparing them for advanced study and careers in theatre, concert production, broadcasting, and other live entertainment industries.
