Scenic Design & Construction

The Scenic Design & Construction program at SCPA trains students to transform scripts into fully realized stage environments, blending artistic vision with technical expertise. Students learn how to conceptualize and design sets, then bring those designs to life through hands-on construction, painting, and finishing. This major combines elements of art, architecture, engineering, and craftsmanship to prepare students for careers in theatre, film, television, and live entertainment.

Scenic Design

Students explore the creative side of stage environments, developing skills in:

• Script Analysis & Conceptualization – interpreting texts and creating designs that support the director’s vision and storytelling needs.
• Drafting & Rendering – learning both hand drafting and computer-aided design to communicate ideas through ground plans, elevations, and visual renderings.
• Model Making – building scale models to test ideas and problem-solve before full production.
• Research & History – studying architectural styles, historical periods, and cultural contexts to ensure authenticity.
• Collaboration – working with directors, lighting, costume, and sound designers to achieve cohesive productions.

Scenic Construction

Hands-on training develops the technical skills needed to build and execute designs, including:

• Carpentry & Metalwork – working with wood, steel, plastics, and other materials.
• Rigging & Automation – learning safe rigging practices and exploring stage automation systems.
• Scenic Painting & Finishing – painting backdrops, creating textures, and applying finishes that enhance storytelling.
• Props & Fabrication – designing, building, or sourcing props that complete the stage environment.
• Safety, Budgeting & Scheduling – applying best practices in workshop and stage safety while understanding the logistics of production.

Skills Developed

Students strengthen their abilities in drawing, painting, and color theory while building technical knowledge in construction, design software, and project management. Emphasis is placed on problem-solving, communication, and collaboration, essential skills for working in production environments.

Pathways Beyond SCPA

Graduates are well prepared for advanced study at top theatre programs such as the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM), Carnegie Mellon University, NYU Tisch School of the Arts, and the University of North Carolina School of the Arts.

Training in Scenic Design & Construction leads to a wide variety of careers, including:

• Scenic Designer for theatre, film, opera, television, or theme parks
