Dear Cincinnati Public Schools Families:
Ohio Gov. Mike Dewine ordered all schools in the state to close for a mandatory three-week spring break to help stop the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19). The district will comply with the Governor’s orders, and will close schools beginning Tuesday, March 17, 2020.
There are no confirmed cases of coronavirus in Cincinnati Public Schools.
CPS has been working on a contingency plan in the event of such a mandate and is well-positioned to execute it. Teachers have prepared learning packets to keep the district’s nearly 37,000 students engaged at home. These packets will be sent home with students on Friday, March 13. They also will be available through Schoology, the district’s learning management tool that gives students, teachers and parents an easy way to connect and communicate. The learning packets will include personalized instructions to help parents access Schoology if they have not already done so.
Cincinnati Public Schools will be open on Monday, March 16. The district officially closes after the final school bell rings on Monday. As of the writing of this letter, CPS will reopen schools on Monday, April 6, 2020.
District leaders are determining ways to ensure students who take advantage of our free and reduced- price breakfast and lunch programs continue to have access to healthy meals. In addition, we are working out protocols to minimize disruption of other specialized services, such as mental health supports. We will be forwarding this information to parents on Monday, March 16.
We recognize the hardship this closure may present to many of our families. We wanted to give your family as much time as possible to adjust.
Please continue to monitor the district’s website at cps-k12.org for updates. We will keep you posted on any new developments.
Laura Mitchell, Superintendent
