Overview

SCPA’s Costume Design and Technology program offers an engaging and challenging curriculum that includes firm academic foundation, a high level of textile art skills, theatrical application and practice, knowledge of design coupled with employability skills that will prepare students to be successful in the world of Costuming and Wardrobe work.

The program fulfills this commitment to our students by:

  • Providing career-oriented education and training leading to a high school diploma, employment and/or placement in an institution of higher education.
  • Offering courses designed to build awareness, abilities, and interests so that students become empowered and knowledgeable citizens.
  • Sharing joint responsibility with my colleagues to ensure that the academic skills of our students are strong and sufficient to assure their success not only in the career/technical program, but also in the total school experience.
  • Expecting every student in the program will assume a high level of responsibility and accountability for developing diplomacy, leadership, costume/wardrobe specific skills and the knowledge needed for their individual goals.
  • By integrating technical, academic and work-place knowledge skills that are essential in developing each student’s individual potential so they can compete in a technological and global society.
  • Encouraging students to understand their potential as Life Long Learners.

In order to meet the requirements necessary to graduate with an arts diploma in costuming a student must:

  • Successfully complete the two year cycle of Costume Technician Fundamentals and Application with a minimum GPA of 2.25
  • Successfully complete the required two-year cycle of Costume Design Fundamentals and Application with a minimum GPA of 2.25.
  • Successfully complete a combined four years in the Internship and Practicum program with a minimum GPA of 2.25
  • Successfully pass bi-annual Arts Boards with a minimum grade level of Passing and with no warning or Failure grades in their final year
  • Be deemed at a minimum level of proficient in all relevant Ohio Career Technical standards

In order to achieve an Honors Arts Diploma in Costume design and Technology students must:

  • Achieve all of the above
  • Complete at least one year of Introduction to Costume Design and Technology with a minimum GPA of 2.50
  • Take and successfully complete all work required for the AP Studio Art 3-D classes.
  • Participate in at least 2 main stage productions every year for the past four years.
  • Successfully establish leadership positions on at least three of their last five main stage show.

To achieve an Honors Arts Diploma with Distinction in Costume Design and Technology a student must meet all of the requirements above as well as:

  • Successfully complete all six years of the Costume Design and Technology curriculum with a minimum GPA of 2.50
  • Successfully design or co-design a main stage production
  • Submit an AP Studio Art 3-D portfolio to the Collage Board
  • Meet or exceed the two a year main stage production requirement
  • Pass the last two Arts Boards with Excellent ratings.
  • Interned outside of SCPA as a Costume Technician, artist or designer

Kathy Magistrelli, Technical Theatre - Costume Design

Katherine Magistrelli holds degrees in both Theater Arts and History form Edgecliff College of Xavier University. Before joining SCPA she was costume designer for Xavier University, Cincinnati Children’s Theater and numerous other community theater and regional productions. Katherine is a certified Career Technical teacher and is currently completing her Master’s degree in Education.  

"I am committed to providing, relevant, challenging, high quality education that will enable graduates to reach career and life goals through knowledge and skills training that meets the needs of business, industry, and continuing education. I approach teaching my classes with a rigorous and scholarly attitude. The goal of the program is to understand the history of, relevance of, methods and techniques of textile arts and costume design. It is a personal goal to educate leaders, not followers. I have extremely high expectations and for my students. It is imperative they have the same for themselves and are willing to work hard and commit fully to their art."
